  A: A short-barreled side-by-side, named for the shotguns stagecoach guards carried. Short barrels make it quick to swing and easy to store, which is why the layout is popular for home defense, vehicle and boat carry, and cowboy action shooting.

  A: Yes. Federal law requires a shotgun barrel of at least 18" and an overall length of at least 26"; the COACH is 18" and 35", so it is a standard shotgun, not an NFA item. Never shorten the barrels. The COACH is compliant in California, Maryland and Massachusetts.
• Q: Which choke should I use in the COACH for home defense?
  A: Cylinder (included) or Improved Cylinder with buckshot, patterned at 7 to 15 yards. Keep the Full tube for birdshot at distance, and never fire slugs through Full.
• Q: Do shorter barrels lose velocity or pattern?
  A: Very little. Modern shotshell powders burn fast, so 18" barrels give up only a small amount of velocity to 24" barrels, which makes little practical difference at shotgun distances. Pattern is set by the choke tube, not barrel length: with the same tube, the COACH patterns like the 24".

  A: The front trigger fires the right barrel and the rear trigger the left. Fire the front trigger first so the trigger finger moves rearward to the second trigger; firing the rear trigger first can pinch the finger against the front trigger under recoil.
